Project Introduction

Between Horizons is set aboard the Zephyr, humanity's first generation ship en route to another star. You assume the role of Stella, who was born on the ship 24 years ago and recently inherited her father's post as Chief of Security. Dive into the conspiracy behind the incident that threatens to disrupt the Zephyr's social order and foil its mission.

Between Horizons is a modern 2.5D pixel art adventure that brings a branching narrative into a semi-open world. The team at DigiTales has applied numerous lessons from their first game Lacuna and proven solutions to detective game design problems to maximize player agency in the investigation process – all the while maintaining the tight pacing of a meaningful story that will ask you to reevaluate your moral compass and make increasingly tough decisions as the situation aboard the ship spirals out of control.

About Developer

DigiTales Interactive is a small development studio based in Saarbrücken, Germany. Our team has a diverse background in various disciplines including literature, music, marketing, pixel art, and programming. Our games employ established storytelling wisdom from various media to convey philosophical ideas and other thought-provoking subject matter without sacrificing fun and entertainment.

With our previous project Lacuna (our game debut), we have proven that we can create immersive narrative-driven game worlds. Between Horizons is another choice-driven game in an original sci-fi world. However, this time around, we added a semi-open world and new, innovative solutions to some classic detective game design problems, merging investigation gameplay with a branching sci-fi story in an ever-expanding Metroidvania-style environment.

Since we create original content, we have the freedom to design a diverse character cast. First, we have our female protagonist Stella – who was born and raised on a generation ship. She and many other citizens of the Zephyr must face the reality of having to spend their entire lives on the ship. This premise serves as a metaphor for the younger generation having to deal with the decisions of their elders, and it’s the lens through which the game explores the topic of intergenerational responsibility. In writing the story, we attempt to empathize with characters of all ages and their perspectives on the matter.

We are big fans of sci-fi franchises like Ghost in the Shell and The Expanse which include strong female main characters. In choosing a bisexual female main character for Between Horizons, we seek to strengthen the representation of less widespread role models in the medium. Other characters on the Zephyr belong to various ethnicities, races and gender identities. We strongly believe in a future where these superficial descriptors will matter less and less.
