Project Introduction

Night Mafia is a unique multiplayer game that will make you lie to friends and doubt their words. Even the person closest to you could turn out to be the mafia, and only your deduction skills will help you unmask the traitor hiding among you.

Lore:

Living on the brink of poverty, you couldn't pay off your debts, leaving you with no choice but to participate in the horrific show Night Mafia, which offers a chance to escape poverty. But everything comes at a price.

Gameplay:

Every day survived is simply luck that you haven’t been betrayed by friends or killed by the mafia. Your victory depends solely on you, but it will be hard to win without the trust of others.

In Night Mafia, every day, every action, every decision affects the final outcome of the game. The game is divided into three sessions, each one a key to your survival or demise.

Day Session

The game begins during the day. Your objective is to locate vending machines on the map, acquire items, and participate in mini-games scattered across the area. These mini-games vary: some require teamwork, while others can be completed solo. The harder the mini-game and the better you perform, the more valuable the reward. Time management is critical to success during the day. Failing to buy necessary items before the session ends can have fatal consequences, as it will be hard to survive the night without protection. Your duties also vary depending on your assigned role, but the main goal for every resident remains the same—prepare for nightfall.

During free time, you can team up with other players to invite them to spend the night in the same house. But be careful: your guest could be the mafia.

Night Session

After an active day, the most dangerous part begins—the night. Your safety depends on how well you’ve prepared: which items you bought for protection, how you placed them in the house, and whether the mafia has the time or tools to break in. For both the mafia and residents, purchased items are crucial, as all actions depend on their choices during the day.

Players can also call any house and talk to its resident. If they don’t pick up, that could be a bad sign...

Your role at night determines your objectives. Residents must do everything possible to keep the mafia out, while the mafia, on the other hand, must find a way to break into a resident’s house. Special roles like Sheriff or Tracker have unique abilities, adding new paths to achieve nighttime goals.

Morning Debate

If you survived the night, congratulations—the most exciting part begins: morning debate! Here, everyone has the right to speak, lie, manipulate facts, and try to convince others. But be careful—acting too aggressively might arouse suspicion. In the morning, all residents can participate in voting to select a player suspected of being part of the mafia; their head will be taken by the guillotine.

End of Game

If all the mafia members are exposed and executed, the residents win. If the mafia is left alone with a single resident, the mafia wins. If neither condition is met, a new day begins, and the game continues.

Additional Mechanics

There are also numerous other mechanics that are crucial for maintaining balance and adding to the fun. As seen with the phone mechanic, the game includes in-game voice and text chats.

Additional Roles

Here’s a closer look at two custom role mechanics:

Tracker – Can purchase a special item called the “Magnifying Glass” in the store, allowing them to search for mafia clues during the day session. This power has energy that regenerates over time, so the player can’t spend the entire day searching. It’s essential to manage time during the day session to earn money and shop. This role enables the player to see which houses the mafia entered the previous night. However, the tracker must be careful; although players can’t see special items in each other’s hands, their actions may look suspicious.

Sheriff – Can buy cameras and a tablet from the store. In each house where they reside, the sheriff can install external cameras. Through the tablet, the sheriff can monitor mafia activity at night, and if the mafia appears on one of the cameras, the sheriff has the chance to snap a photo, revealing the mafia member’s name by morning.

Events

The game also includes events that aim to diversify gameplay and distract players from the standard mini-games. If the majority of players vote to start an event during the day session, the following day, everyone is transported to a special arena where they can participate together in “Hot Potato” or “Collect the Coins.”

In both events, players can set each other up and play dirty tricks. After all, the more people you can trap in a cage, the more entertaining the show will be!

Night Mafia is a game where every dollar earned, every item purchased, and every word spoken can be decisive. Will you outwit everyone and claim victory? Join Night Mafia, where only the sharpest survive!

About Developer

You live your life, and everything goes haywire: you get fired from your job, your girlfriend leaves you, and you have no idea where to go next. Then, one of your friends suggests, “Wouldn't it be cool to make a Mafia game… A board game?” But why stop there when you could create something even closer to reality? What if we could give more meaning to the lives of ordinary citizens, give them a purpose for their existence? And that's how it all started.

Realizing that the project could become massive, we started searching for a team on Ukrainian forums like Game Development UA. There, we found people eager to join, but there were also a lot of skeptics who scrutinized our initial document (and, as time has shown, quite rightly so). Despite the critiques, we managed to gather a group of like-minded people and began creating. Most of us didn’t have much experience, and many team members came and went—some couldn’t handle the workload, others just weren’t the right fit.

Three months into development, we finally had a stable team, with some members working during their free time and others dedicating entire days to the project. They were completely different people with different goals: some wanted to learn new skills, others dreamed of having a project for their portfolio, and some just wanted to create something meaningful in this world. We had students and parents, young and experienced members, yet understanding always prevailed in the team, despite our differences in age and experience.

There were moments of uncertainty as well. As the leader, I didn’t always know the right way forward. But in one of those moments, a person joined us, took a look at our project, was amazed that we were still afloat despite our limited knowledge, and decided to join anyway. This was like a breath of fresh summer air. This person became our mentor: they taught us crucial things, showed us what needed to be changed, and most importantly, inspired us to set a clear goal.

It became evident that completing the game was already a dream, and our real goal became creating a prototype to showcase at a festival. And despite all the challenges, bugs, sleepless nights, and our initial lack of experience, we pulled together everything we could to bring this project to life.

Although our primary goal was to gain experience, we got so much more. For many on the team, this project was an opportunity to prove themselves, learn something new, and grow. It was more than just a game—it was a journey on which we all found our place and realized we were capable of much more than we initially thought.
