Project Introduction
'The Puppeteer' is a short but thought-provoking top-down action-adventure game. Evoking the retro style of games such as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and the original Legend of Zelda, you explore various lands in an attempt to understand the methods and madness of The Puppeteer.Throughout the game, themes of control and manipulation are dissected as the true mastermind or 'puppeteer' behind the plot becomes greyer the more you explore.
The 3 main characters: Novi (The player's character), Mavis and The Puppeteer's fate are all intertwined with the player's actions, whom they fight and what secrets they discover. Multiple endings can be unlocked as a result of this.
The gameplay features a unique potions crafting system. Berries of 7 different colours, that boost 7 different stats respectively, are mixed together with the resulting potion granting the combination of those powers when used. The player is given free reign on what quantity of berry to mix in each potion, and can therefore form their own strategy for navigating through each level. They may choose to craft potions all of the same colour for maximum power in one stat or choose to mix and match for a more balanced build. Everything from dealing extra damage to healing within levels is controlled through what potions you craft.
About Developer
I am a solo game developer who does this alongside a full-time job (as a software engineer). My dream is to one day be able to work full time as a game developer. This is my first game, and it is close to completion, with intended release towards the end of this year.
Alongside gamedev and software engineering, I am also a passionate artist.
My first time showcasing this game was at the GDLX Expo in March. It was an incredible experience, and building on from that, I am showcasing at 2 more events - The Barclays Games Frenzy at the end of this month and the Medway Games Festival at the start of July. I am also a member of the Game Dev London discord and attend their monthly pub meets in Clapham.
I have also set up a steam page for my game, that is currently in review by Steam. I will aim to send over the link if it is published before this competition's deadline (fingers crossed)
