Project Introduction

The goal of Project: Insanity is to make a simple game that is easy to pick up and play but difficult enough to make it exciting and challenging.

This project is an isometric beat-em-up with a focus on fast-paced combat. The player has to go through randomly generated level layouts, dash through closed doors and knock down every enemy that stands. From the beginning, the player has their bare fists and heavy strikes for up-close combat. However, if they manage to pick up a melee weapon, they can deal with enemies from a farther range for a limited use. It only takes one hit for the player to be defeated, so caution has to be expected. For escaping enemy surroundings, the player is able to dodge/roll through them.

As of right now, there are three types of enemies the player can encounter: basic, heavy and shield types. Basic enemies are the most common ones and are knocked down with a single strike just like the player. They can also spawn with a melee weapon in hand and attack the player with it or drop it if the player gets them first. These enemies also have the chance of undergoing a fake defeat and "bamboozling" the player by respawning around them. Heavy enemies are less common and take two strikes instead of one in order to be knocked down, unless the player attacks them using a melee weapon instead. In that case, it only takes one strike as well. Heavy types are also able to pick up nearby barrels and throw them at the player from a distance. Shield enemies only appear on every third level, with no other type of enemies present, in a group of four. With these enemies, the player is unable to run up to them and beat them. They can only be knocked down with a single strike in a short time given opportunities after getting up close to the player.

There is still a lot I wish to do with this project, like implement controller support, add VFX, gather better SFX, make a better "soundtrack", get 3D models and make the enemies more interesting. This project is currently available on my itch.io page (https://arthur-svars.itch.io/project-insanity) for free and any future updates or the finished game is going to be available there as well.
