Project Introduction

I'll leave the gameplay and plot to the game, as those qualities are fairly self evident. The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is a 3D Action Soulslike. Instead, I'll share a bit about the project's goals.

Our main inspiration was, of course, Dark souls, but in particular, the sense that game has of wandering in an empty, dying world with no clear idea of what's expected of you. In Dark Souls, you find little fragments of the past, and possibly piece together a sense for what's expected of you and your place in the world.

I found that idea very beautiful, because I think it's a very human problem that everyone struggles with: we must learn our culture's traditions... expectations... wisdoms, to know ourselves and our place in the world, and just like in Dark Souls, all of that is always in decay, and needs to be re-lit anew with each generation. Unfortunately in Dark Souls case, all of this is incredibly subtle and not well expressed. Gameplay wise, the lore is almost impossible to decipher and doesn't ultimately matter. This is common in games - many elements being dis-integrated.

Enter Nostalgaia's main goal - to take this beautiful idea and attempt to radically integrate with all of the game's elements it so that the final experience might become more than the sum of it's parts. Nostalgaia is a game where you dig through fragments of the past. It's also a game with a story about the past and what your place in it is. It's about the past, and nostalgia, in a more holistic sense. It's my deepest hope that by making a game's elements fit together like this, we as an industry can create products that feel spontaneously meaningful.

About Developer

Over The Moon is a small developer based in Vancouver, Canada. We have a focus on exploring how we might play with narrative mechanics in an interesting way. Over The Moon is fairly insular, honestly. I do respect the indie scene, but I can be a bit isolated, for the most part.
