Once a Tale
Vincent Presseau

Project Introduction

Once a Tale reimagines the classic tale Hansel & Gretel, with a twist. Lost in the woods, they find a candy house but try to escape the evil witch that lives in it. As you explore the magical forest you will discover that it is inhabited by many characters from other tales as well but they seem different. It is a retelling of the tale but also an allegory on child abuse.
Enchanted forests, wicked witches and disturbing puzzles to solve are just some of the obstacles that Hansel and Gretel will encounter during their travels. Each member of our duo has their own abilities that will help them get through all the pitfalls. As they progress, Hansel and Gretel will unlock new abilities with accessories found or given by characters from other tales.
Will our famous duo manage to get out of this enchanted forest and find their way home?
Using real handmade puppets and real miniature terrains which are then 3D scanned to create a palpable, fully interactable, fantastic world, we are making an experience that blurs the line between video game and stop motion animated film. With a great story and stunning visuals, our goal is to create something truly magical.
Having finished our prototype in spring 2021, we have been finalists for the 2021 Ubisoft Indie Series, the 2021 Eidos-Sherbrooke Innovation Program, the 2021 Canada Game Day by Xsolla, was one of the 10 winners of the Quebec Caravan "On the road to the International" pitch contest and received Bronze at the Big Indie Pitch during the 2021 Pocket Gamer Connect event in London. We are in production now, as we have received CMF funding for production and should be shipping in the first half of 2023.

About Developer

2 Igloos is the result of a joint venture between Carcajou Games and Triple Boris. We decided to use the complementary strengths of both studios to create the best team needed to create this project.
Carcajou has initiated the project, developed the initial concept, core design as well as the art direction and creation of the handmade assets and its knowledge of photogrammetry.
Triple Boris had the means of providing the production team. It provided technical competences and design experience to develop the game on multiple platforms.

About Carcajou Games
Created in 2016 by a father of 4, Carcajou Games was born out of a strong wish to do things differently, to make games he could play with his children that put emphasis on exploration, discovery and less on violence and combat. Its mission is to create high quality games with a strong focus on fun and engaging narrative experiences.

It is our strong belief that, like movies, which started as popular entertainment but evolved in a multitude of styles and subjects, video games can be used as tools to teach and to raise awareness on numerous issues.

We are a team of diverse backgrounds, from AAA veterans to newly but hard working graduates all pushing in the same direction, to create long lasting games and experiences.

About Triple Boris
Triple Boris’ adventure started in 2014, and experienced a considerable growth in 2016. With its offices located in Varennes, the team now consists of over 50 employees. After having taken on key roles for industry giants such as EA and Ubisoft for over a decade, Simon Dansereau wanted to set up a smaller company, one where each employee would be included in the decision-making process and where collaboration would be encouraged. Triple Boris was born.
In 2016, Triple Boris joined the Quebec Guild of Independent Video Game Developers. That same year, several members of the team obtained their certification for Unity, a multiplatform game engine of widespread use in the video game industry. Then, in April 2016, the company received two prizes in the OSEntreprendre Challenge’s “Innovations in Technique and Technology” category.
