Project Introduction

Gedda Cake is a pixel art metroidvania with 6 playable characters that can be swapped on the fly without the use of any menus or pauses. Use their different abilities and mechanics to battle enemies, solve puzzles and traverse the sugar-coated interconnected world of Sugria, in search for the main source of food and power: the Cakes. Getting cakes will unlock new skills for the character that consumes the specific cake, opening new areas to explore and increase the player's capabilities for combat and movement.

Gedda Cake has a deliberate combat, with windups on each characters attacks and specific movements that need to be taken into consideration when fighting enemies, so players don't end up missing attacks, falling off platforms or put themselves in harms way.

The story revolves around an invasion that is happening on the planet of Sugria, the Galacteons (dragons) home world. The other 5 races that are responsible for the balance of the universe are tired of maintaining the Galacteons work and decide to revolt against them, invading their home to cut them out of their source of power, the cakes, so they are unable to grow and continue the expansion of the universe. Gedda is the only sibling that wasn't found as he has been sleeping on his room for thousands of years, at the most secure area of Sugria. So after waking up and finding out that no food is available, he embarks in an adventure to find his siblings, and most importantly, get the cakes.

Gedda Cake's world is based on the existence of 7 elements that govern all living beings and matters: fire, water, earth, ice, light, dark and wind. The elemental system is an important mechanic in the game that influences combat directly, where fighting enemies weak against the player's element will result in double damage during combat and reduced damage when getting hit, while enemies stronger against the element will result in double damage taken by the player while zero damage is dealt to adversaries. This mechanic will result in players planning around what character to use against enemies in most situations, where taking out key enemies can take priority while putting the player in delicate situations with their surroundings.

About Developer

Flannel Bear Games is a small indie studio of 2 people, a married gay couple that lives in Toronto, Ontario. We are 1 artist and 1 programmer, responsible for all content of the game Gedda Cake. We've been working on small projects together for more than 5 years before we decided to work on a bigger commercial project, which became Gedda Cake, a metroidvania we are working on for almost 2 years.
We also hired a music composer as a contractor for the game, doing the soundtrack and sfx, who lives in Vancouver, BC. He has been working with us for almost 2 years as well.
